What the experts say:
1. True. Forget what you've heard, read or think, button down collars arecasual. The buttons originate from the sport of polo where they kept the collar tabs from flapping up into the faces of the players as they galloped around on horseback. Hence, button down is sporty and casual. That’s why you don’t see button down collars at a formal black tie event. Smart dressers won’t even wear them with a double breasted suit.
2. True. This is classic male business wear for a reason: it communicatestrustworthiness. Unless you are in an artistically creative role, departing from this classical look entails risk, ie, you can blow your credibility, fast.
3. False. Clients prefer accountants who look like accountants not swingers. Traditional formal business wear, ie, suit and tie, communicate the professionalism that people seek in their accountant. As always, the issue is credibility. If your image does not mesh with your words, the client won’t buy.
4. False. This is a common misconception. To follow this suggestion strictly is absurd and counter-productive. You think your boss won’t notice that your threads are better than theirs? The objective of ‘dressing above’ your current role is to allow others to visualize you in a more senior role. But use common sense. Dressing like the CEO when you’re a management trainee will backfire, send you broke, and convince people that you lack judgment. Instead, observe how your direct superior dresses – then consider emulating their level of dress.
5. False. There is no reliable evidence that casual dress increases productivity. In fact, there is far more evidence to the contrary. For example, one study of Fortune 500 companies reported that 70% of CEOs claim that casual dress at work reducedproductivity. This finding correlates with our research. We've yet to find a company claiming improved productivity through the adoption of casual dress.
6.True. Jackets denote formal authority for both genders, but especially for women. In one study, 85% of observers assumed that a woman who was not wearing a jacket was junior to her jacket wearing counterpart. So wear your jeans in support of the day – but keep your jacket on if you’re exercising authority as a Manager.
7.True. Shoes are the most revealingsocio-economic indicator that you wear. For centuries our language has used shoe metaphors to convey messages about status, eg, ‘down at the heels’, ‘best foot forward’, ‘shoe on the other foot.’ To convey credibility, your shoes must be in excellent condition and appropriate for the situation. For corporate men, it’s a simple choice between lace ups or slip-on shoes.

Happy Monsoon Feet

Monsoons are always welcoming relief from the blistering heat of the summer, but a lot of us dread monsoon because of the adverse affects the rain has on our regular lifestyle. Personally the worst bit about monsoon is the affect it has on my feet, making me dread stepping out as much as possible. As much as we’d like to avoid stepping out some times we have no choice, but to do so. Here are some dos and don’ts when it comes to your feet in monsoon: 

 

☆Avoid wearing heels in rainy season. But, if you just cannot resist wearing heels then go for slip-resistant sandals of heels, not over 2 inches.

☆While purchasing plastic footwear, make sure that the pair doesn’t have any sharp edges as those could give you shoe bites.

☆For this season particularly, whether you are buying flat sandals or heels, look for footwear with good grip that hold feet in place and do not slip when the feet and shoes are wet.

☆Don’t keep your shoes and sandals under the bed or inside the shoe rack when it is wet. This gives birth to bacteria’s. Let them dry under the sun to keep away the bacteria’s from breeding in your shoes.

☆If your wet feet have tendency to cause odour, mix 5 ml of peppermint oil in a tub of lukewarm water with handful of neem leaves and soak your feet for 10 minutes. Dry and spray talcum powder on it. This will help in reducing the perspiration plus relieve you from odour-causing bacteria.

☆Exfoliating your feet regularly while taking a bath is one of the best monsoon feet care tips. You can do it by soaking your feet in plain water or lukewarm water. If you don’t have foot soak , then mix up a normal hair shampoo enough to make foam. Then dip your feet for 5 – 10 minutes depending on the quality of your feet , whether it suffers from cracks or dryness. Then scrub up with a scrubbing material or foot scrub especially made for feet. You can also use a pumice stone for this.

☆Avoid wearing leather footwear as much as possible since the material gets easily infected with fungus and bacteria. They have a tendency to support bacteria because of the moisture. If you have a passion for leather footwear, look out for Waterproof shoes. The waterproof range of well-known brands is quite stylish and perfect for a rainy day. Formal shoes made of waterproof leather and shoes with foam base that are odor-resistant are a huge hit with office-goers.

☆Do not neglect the spaces between your toes and fingers. Dry them properly and sprinkle talcum powder between them. There are higher chances of fungal infection in the spaces.

☆Applying petroleum jelly on feet after cleaning also helps to moisturize and prevent water contact directly with skin as it repels water.

☆Do not wear closed, tight-fitting footwear. Avoid wearing boots and shoes as they hold water thereby making it sodden. Use slippers or sandals instead.

☆Always keep a separate dry pair of work shoes at your office, college locker. So you can swap the wet footwear with dry ones when you reach your work place. That way you avoid sitting uncomfortably in the wet footwear and invite less infections.Always wear clean and dry cotton socks.

☆Do keep extra pair of socks so that you can change them once you reach your destination after the travel.

Matching your shirt with tie

Just follow these simple rules and put together a stylish ensemble for various occasions.

Men’s fashion in general is increasingly seeing a departure from the conventional sartorial rules. Today, it’s more about injecting your own whimsy into a look rather than taking the tried-and-tested route. When it comes to pulling off the appropriate-yet-fashion-forward shirt and tie combo, you could either follow these simple rules or go with your instincts and personal style, just as long as you don’t end up sticking out like a sore thumb. It’s like choosing the right dressing for your salad—you keep the textures and taste in mind while pairing the two.

Colour block or tone-on-tone
You could either opt for colour blocking, which is pairing two contrasting colours, or go for the current trend of tonal layering, which means picking up the colours or textures from the same family. In case you have picked the shirt first, focus on the dominant colours and invest in a tie with accents that reflect the colour of your shirt.

Pattern pairing
Combining contrasting patterns like a checkered shirt with a tie in different checks in a fun idea. However, ensure that the print on your shirt is minuscule in size, while the ones on the tie are comparatively bigger. Choosing a shirt and tie in the same family of colours is a brilliant idea.
Most men usually like to take the safer route of opting for ties in solid and semi-solid colours and they prefer to stay away from strong patterns. Solids are a classic, but if patterned ties are paired correctly they can make a strong fashion statement. When trying this look ensure that the patterns on the tie and the shirt and suit do not clash.

Striped to perfection
Don’t make the mistake of combining a slim-striped shirt with a slim-striped tie. Instead pair a thin-striped shirt with a polka dotted or a striped tie for the ultimate dandy look. Paisley and plaid ties are a great option for quirky and confident dressers among us. If you are opting for striped shirts, refrain from trying to match similarly sized stripes. Ensure that the shirt and tie stripes aren’t similar in terms of size and width.

The safe shirt route
Your dress shirt should match your tie. If there is a colour clash it might look far from sharp. Solid shirts are your safest bets. White and light blue Oxford shirts are of course versatile and can match anything. Invest in a slew of off-white and pastel shirts. However, ensure the fabric of the shirts and the tie is contrasting because this textural tension can raise the ensemble to another level. A knitted tie goes very well with a classic chambray shirt.

Add a fun element
If it is a check fabric, then break the monotony of the shirt by opting for a playful tie—paisley or knitted depending on your taste.

Most importantly, be comfortable with your attire. If you think a certain pattern or colour is too daring for your personal style, simply don’t wear it. The key is to have fun with fashion.

Are You Happy?: A Must Read


We are all searching for happiness. In achieving this happiness our attitude in life plays a crucial role.

After years of hard and dedicated service to his Company, Ahmed was being appointed at an elegant reception as the new Director. It was a small function where his wife Fatimah, a Home Executive,  and some of the wives of the other persons in top management were also present.

In an adjacent room, Ann, the wife of the CEO of the Company, asked Ahmed's wife a very odd an usual question; "Does your husband make you happy?"

The husband, Ahmed, who at that moment was not at her side, but was sufficiently near to hear the question, paid attention to the conversation, sitting up slightly, feeling secure, even filling his chest lightly in pride and hope,  would definitely not publically lower or degrade her husband, would answer affirmatively, since she had always been there for him during their marriage and generally in life. Nevertheless, to both his and the others' surprise, she replied simply;

"No, no he doesn't make me happy…"

The room became uncomfortably silent, as if everyone were listening to the spouse's response. There was a sudden coldness in the air. The husband was petrified. A frown appeared on his face. He couldn't believe what his wife was saying, especially at such an important occasion for him. To the amazement of her husband and of everyone!

Fatimah sat up firmly and explained in a modest but stern tone to the other wives who were present;

"No, he doesn't make me happy… I AM HAPPY. The fact that I am happy or not doesn't depend on him, but on me. GOD has granted each of us intellect and discretion to reason, interpret and decide. GOD made me the person upon which my happiness depends. I make the choice to be happy in each situation and in each moment of my life. If my happiness were to depend on other people, on other things or circumstances on the face of this earth, I would be in serious trouble! Over my life I have learned a couple of things: I decide to be happy and the rest is a matter of 'experiences or circumstances;' like helping, and understanding, accepting, listening, consoling; and with my spouse, I have lived and practiced this many times. Honestly true happiness lies in being content."

Relieved and reassured, a smile was clearly noticed on Ahmed's face.

Moral:  Happiness will always be found in contentment, forgiveness and in loving yourself and others. To truly love is difficult, it is to forgive unconditionally, to live, to take the "experiences or circumstances" as they are, facing them together and being happy with conviction. There are those who say I cannot be happy  :

☆Because I am sick.
☆Because I have no money.
☆Because it's too cold.
☆Because they insulted me.
☆Because someone stopped loving me.
☆Because someone didn't appreciate me.

But what you don't know is that you can be happy even though you are sick, whether it is too hot, whether you have money or not, whether someone has insulted you, or someone didn't love you, or hasn't valued you.

Being Happy is an attitude about life and each one of us must decide!

Being Happy, depends on you!......:)

Workplace Dress Codes Decoded!

A job interview, a new job, or a meeting at a client’s office can make you wonder how you should dress, especially since workplace dress codes can be vague. Here’s a guide to following dress codes, so as to not be under or overdressed for any new professional experience.

When you’re dressing for an occasion, you usually have some idea as to what you should wear. For instance, you know that if you show up at a nightclub wearing shorts and open shoes, you won’t be permitted to enter, unless you’re best friends with the owner.

However, at the workplace, there usually isn't any specific way that you need to dress. Broadly, there’s formal and casual. But while the lines between the two might be almost completely blurred for women, dressing guidelines for men are stricter, but have become confusing. In fact, in India, ‘formal’ may or may not include a jacket or even a tie. So let’s dissect a few dress-code terms that you might hear or read, but may not always know how to follow.

Casual

This is usually the simplest to follow. You cannot possibly go wrong with a T-shirt and jeans or any pants. However, in the workplace, it might be a good idea to keep it sober with the tees. Avoid graphic prints or outrageous messages. Casual could include shorts and open footwear, but that’s not a given, so you should avoid it, until you’ve tested the waters.

Smart Casuals



When the word ‘smart’ comes in, you should definitely think ‘collars’. A casual shirt, perhaps checked or striped, worn with jeans or chinos would be fine. A collared polo T-shirt would also be appropriate. Crew-neck T-shirts, shorts, sneakers and open footwear shouldn’t even be considered.

Semi-Formal

Here’s where you ditch the T-shirt altogether. Jeans might still be appropriate, but not the distressed kind. Your shirt shouldn’t be very bold or bright, and must always be tucked in. A linen jacket or a blazer thrown onto the ensemble would be perfect.

Business Formal

This dress code requires you to ensure that you are wearing trousers, a jacket, or preferably a two-piece suit. Generally, a tie must be worn. The shoes you wear should be formal—brogues, oxfords, etc. In India, given the weather conditions, most offices don’t enforce the jacket, and some even forgo the tie, while they also allow moccasins. However, when in doubt, stick to the former ensemble, tie, jacket, et al.

Formal

This ideally refers to evening formal, could be for drinks with clients or an office dinner. A dark-colored suit is mandatory for this look, generally worn with a white shirt. A dress code in an invitation may specify ‘tie optional’. If it isn’t specified, you should avoid going open-collar.

Friday Dressing


This is a term generally used in workplaces where the regular dress code is business formal and if that is the case, simply follow the semi-formal guidelines. In some offices, you might even be permitted to wear T-shirts, but that will most probably only include collared, polo T-shirts. You can also included brown shoes and brown belt for Friday dressing, however on other days these should be avoided.

So there you have it. You shouldn't have any trouble figuring out what is appropriate and what isn’t, and you never have to be the one sticking out of the crowd like a sore thumb.

Dressing for a Job Interview

The day has finally arrived! You got an interview. You rehearsed the company’s “About Us” section on their website over and over in your head, you know exactly how many gains and losses they had last year.  But the only thing you don’t have, is interview attire.




Many times students stop by and ask me “What do I need to wear on my interview?”  It can be quite simple, but sometimes it isn’t if you are the indecisive type.  Allow me to share an Image Consultant's insight on what to wear on an interview. 
The employers first impression of you will be your personal appearance.  If you want to WOW them, then you must be dressed to impress!  Remember, you are marketing yourself!  You are trying to “sell” your product and the product is YOU!!

Women's Interview Attire                      
  • Solid color, conservative suit / Indian wear–This all depends on the industry you are interviewing in.  If it is business related, stay on the conservative side.  If it is in public relations, advertising or anything in the arts industry, you might want to spice up your look. Wear more vibrant colors.
  • Coordinated blouse
  • Moderate shoe
  • Only one point of focus
  • Limited jewelry
  • Neat, professional hairstyle
  • Tan or light hosiery
  •  Sparse make-up & perfume
  • Manicured nails
  • Formal bag or briefcase
Men's Interview Attire

  • Solid color, conservative suit - This all depends on the industry you are interviewing in.  If it is business related, stay on the conservative side.  If it is in public relations, advertising or anything in the arts industry, you might want to spice up your look. Wear more vibrant colors.
  •  White long sleeve shirt –Depending on your suit color, you can also wear a blue or cream colored shirt.  Try to always wear a solid color on interviews. Once you get the job, you can of course mix it up!
  • Conservative tie
  • socks matching to pant/ shoe, oxford shoes
  • Very limited jewelry
  • Neat, professional hairstyle
  • Go easy on the aftershave
  • Neatly trimmed nails
  • Portfolio or briefcase (No backpacks Please)

The Art of Dressing up!

HAVE you ever heard somebody described as being dapper or well dressed and wished you could be described that way? I think most people like to make a good impression on others but sometimes do not know exactly how to put themselves together.

As an image consultant, I am keenly aware of how others dress. If somebody does not look great, I usually know exactly what is wrong with his or her outfit and/or hairstyle and mentally re- dress them so they look their best. I think it is important to look your best and see the whole process directly correlating to your self-esteem. Personally speaking, I know that the way I look affects the way I think, feel, act and conduct myself. On those days that I know I look great I feel myself looking forward to seeing people. I am more apt to be friendlier, look people in the face and have them look at me. When I act friendly, others also react positively. This turns into a positive cycle and contributes to a happy day. On the other hand, when I do not look my best, I am not as friendly and hope that I do not run into any body. If I do, it usually makes me uncomfortable. Our image is one of the few things in our lives that we can directly control.

Most of us have more freedom to dress as we please in our personal lives. But in business settings, it is a different story. There is no excuse for sloppiness. People assume that those who do not pay attention to the details of their appearance probably do not take care of the details in their work. What do you think of the person who sends you a letter with spelling or typos on it? Do you think less of the person? Isn't a mistake on a resume the ultimate faux pas for a job applicant?

So how can you be well dressed every day? My five-part definition of a well dressed person is somebody whose clothing and accessories 
1) complement their physical appearance 
2) coordinate in colour, pattern and fabric 
3) fit properly 
4) are current 
5) are appropriate for the occasion. 
Each element is equally important and all must be in place to have you be well dressed.

  • The first element is wearing clothing and accessories that are complimentary to your physical appearance. This means that your clothing should highlight your assets, your positive physical traits and if necessary, diminish your liabilities, your less positive parts. For example, if your shoulders are narrow, you will look much better wearing a jacket with padded shoulders. If you are a little overweight, you should be careful not to wear horizontal stripes because they will make you look heavier. If you are a woman with a small waist, you will look better with a belt and your shirt tucked in.
  • The second element is wearing clothing that coordinates in colour, pattern and fabric. The colours should be harmonious to your eyes, skin and hair colour. If you have dark hair, you will look better in primary colours such as navy, black, brown, red and white. Colours that are pale such as beige, cream and khaki are usually not flattering to people with strong colouring and features. It is best to wear colours that either match or are complimentary to your hair/especially close to your face. I always recommend matching the colours of your belt and shoes and if your watch has a leather band, it should match as well. The same is suggested for handbags and totes.
  • The third element is fit. Fit is one of the biggest areas that most people miss. In order to look great, your clothing must fit properly. Sometimes it is hard to find clothing to fit you exactly because the manufacturers use models who have perfect bodies. My suggestion is to find a brand or a store that has clothing that fits your body and shop there. If you know that the fit is right for one season, it will most probably fit right the next time. If you have any special concerns, such as height or weight, you may need to find a tailor to alter your clothing. 
  • The fourth element is wearing clothing that is current. Fashions change every season and wearing up to date clothing is as important as keeping up with the news, technology and social issues. I am not suggesting that you buy the latest styles every season. I am urging you to invest in classic clothing that will not go out of style. You can update your image every season with new accessories such as shoes, ties and shirts for men and shoes, handbags, eyeglasses and jewelry for women.
  • Finally, last but not least. The last element is wearing clothing and accessories that are appropriate for the situation. If you are overdressed for an occasion, you will feel uncomfortable, as will those around you. Alternately, if you are under-dressed, you might seem disrespectful to your hosts, colleagues or friends. The best way to ensure this from happening is to ask what the dress code is. Casual dress has become so commonplace today that most people are advising guests what to wear in order to avoid making any one uncomfortable.

Although casual dress has many meanings depending on the type of industry you work in, job function, and image goals. My advice is to always bring a jacket with you. If the other people are more casual, you can always remove yours.
And do not forget. You never get a second chance to make a first impression!

Image touches every moment of our life


It takes only 3-7 seconds to form a First Impression, make them count!

In my earlier post I said "image is perception about yourself in your and others eyes and minds". Our image is primarily dependent on how we see ourselves and then how others view it. How we view ourselves is our self esteem. And our  self esteem is clearly visible in ouRoberts titude, body language, expressions, dressing, self confidence, etc. And when others view these things in us, they reciprocate us with respect , otherwise they neglect us. 

Everybody out there is making perceptions about us, based on what we put on display. Right from your milkman, to your maid, to your kids, to your husband, to your neighbors, to your colleagues, your seniors at work, and the list continues... The process starts when you meet some one for the 1st time, in your personal, professional or social life. 
People start forming perceptions about you as soon as they see you, and what do they see in your appearance? Your clothes the first thing, then your grooming, jewelry, facial expressions, body language, etiquette; and based on these they evaluate you and decide weather or not to approach you for any further communication. They form judgement about your character, credibility, intelligence, income level, status, etc. 

Remember "Pretty woman ", where Julia Roberts initially enters a luxury store in a very unsophisticated appearance and is disdained by the saleswoman. Then she goes back to the hotel and shares this with Richard Gere, 
and then he gets her dressed in a beautiful suit, teaches her the basic etiquette and then goes back to the same store ! 

This is the Power of Image!

Image is always from within!

One day all the employees reached the office and saw a big advice written on the door.

Yesterday the person who has been hindering your growth in this company passed away. You are invited to join the funeral.

In the beginning, they got sad for the death of one of their colleagues, but after a while they got curious to know who was the man who hindered their growth.

Everyone thought: Well atleast the man who hindered my progress died!

One by one the thrilled employees got closer to the coffin, and when they looked inside they were speechless. They stood shocked in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul. There was a mirror inside the coffin and everyone who looked inside could see himself.

There was a sign next to the mirror that read:
"There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth...It is you. You are the only person who can influence your happiness, success and realization."

Your life does not change when your boss friends or company change.....your life changes when you change...you go beyond your limiting beliefs and you realize you are the only one responsible for your life.
It's the way you face life-  that makes the difference!

Welcome to Image Smiths

This is my first blog ever.. And it gives me great sense of achievement in writing this.

At the onset let me welcome you to "Consulting Image Smiths". Consulting Image Smiths is a Image Management organisation. Your first query would be "Image"?? Whats is that?? Some of you might assume that its related to IT, or pictures, or any thing else. However let me clarify this, "Image is you! Your valuation about yourself, how you display yourself and how others perceive You to be". Your Image is your "Personal Brand". Hence we call it "You in the eyes and minds of yourself & Others". It is formed by what we do and how we do it!

Let me give you an example, if i ask you to fit a persona into a Image based on the following cues:

  • A voice recognized by every Indian
  • Dynamic & Smart
  • Has screen play experience of over 4 decades
  • Respected and recognized for his work by every one
  • Aged yet modern    
  • Voted as Youth Icon 
I am pretty sure, you would not have read all the cues and still at the 1st attempt guessed it as Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. That is the Power of Image! 

It differentiates you! Makes you Unique! Separates you from the others!
